Honoring Our History: The Cape Verde Exhibition

Sometimes the best ideas begin with a simple question.

“What if more people knew the real story of Cape Verde?”

That single idea became the Cape Verde History Exhibition.

What started as a vision in 2024 eventually became one of the most meaningful projects we have ever been part of. Our goal wasn’t to make money or receive recognition—it was simply to educate people about a country that deserves to be known around the world.

None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of our sponsors. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Pires Brothers, our presenting sponsor, along with MB Streams, Green Islands Apparel, and Neighbourhood Physical Therapy for believing in this project and helping bring it to life.

The exhibition debuted during the Sabor Cruise Festival, our annual four-day celebration of music, culture, and travel. We were fortunate to receive a beautiful exhibition room aboard the ship. From the elegant chandeliers and grand ceilings to the beautifully decorated walls and carpet, it created the perfect atmosphere to tell Cape Verde’s story.

Inside the exhibition, guests explored approximately fifteen historical displays featuring influential Cape Verdeans, the ten islands, important moments in our history, and one portrait recognizing every President of the Republic of Cape Verde. Each display included descriptions that allowed visitors to learn about our nation’s journey in an engaging and meaningful way.

The response exceeded every expectation.

By the second day, guests from all over the world were walking into the room asking, “Where is Cape Verde?” and “Why haven’t I heard about this country before?”

People from Europe, Africa, North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean spent time reading each display, asking questions, and sharing how impressed they were by the country’s history, culture, and accomplishments.

Those conversations reminded us why this project matters.

Interestingly, we began planning the exhibition long before Cape Verde qualified for the FIFA World Cup. Now, with the country receiving unprecedented international attention, interest in both Cape Verde and our educational initiatives has grown tremendously.

That encouragement inspired us to dream even bigger.

Beginning this year, the exhibition will be presented three times annually—twice in Massachusetts and once aboard the Sabor Cruise Festival. Our hope is to continue expanding, reaching new communities, and helping people discover the remarkable history, culture, and people of Cape Verde.

We believe the world deserves to know who we are.

Cape Verdeans are innovators, artists, educators, entrepreneurs, athletes, leaders, and dreamers. Above all, we are people who believe in family, community, resilience, and treating others with kindness.

This exhibition is our small contribution toward preserving our history and sharing it with future generations.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey.

If you know someone whose story deserves to be recognized in a future exhibition, we would love to hear from you. Please submit your nomination through the link below and help us continue preserving the history of Cape Verde for generations to come.
